Transmedia Story Telling
Henry Jenkins discusses in an interview about how transmedia story telling is a growing way for individuals to expand on an idea. The purpose of transmedia story telling is for individuals to connect with others through creating their own stories based on what was initially written. This form of story telling is bringing people together, especially online communities.
With the online community aspect of transmedia story telling, it is almost like the children's game: telephone. I'm sure at some point we have all engaged in telephone... one person whispers a sentence into the person next to them, then that person will whisper what they heard into the ear of the person next to them, then this action will continue until the last person in the line hears the sentence. It is almost comical how botched the sentence becomes once it arrives at the final person, but this idea is very similar to transmedia story telling. The reason it is similar is because the version that is written by fans is a slightly different version of the story, and everyone has their own ideas and interpretations of a story.
A lot of fan pages create stories that present new ideas and storylines. Three commons transmedia story telling examples are:
1) Harry Potter
2) Star Wars
3) Marvel
My all time favorite is Marvel, and since Marvel just released End Game I find this choice to be very fitting. I have not engaged in transmedia story telling before, so I don't have too much experience, so I googled "Transmedia Story Telling Marvel" and came across a blog created through WordPress. The blog had explained how transmedia story telling works and how fans of the cinematic / comic book saga engage in this form of story telling. I think it is pretty cool and interesting to see how fans can expand on an already existing storyline that can even enhance the overall story!
What do you think of transmedia story telling and do you think film makers should look more into the storylines fans have created to make a sequel to the movie based on these stories?
