What Should We Do About Fake News?

Singapore adapted a new law that will warn/flag down social media websites about posts users make in regards to fake news.  In class we have heavily discussed fake news and how it has become a mainstream vocabulary word used all of the time, and many of our classmates have voiced their own experience with fake news.  The new law Singapore has established is controversial because this is jabbing at the free speech.

Social media was created as an outlet for users to express themselves and if they were to publish or repost an article, they would be punished in Singapore, which is why there is a lot of debate surrounding this new law.  If the United States were to establish a law like this I think there would be a lot more problems and fights regarding this.  I know we as Americans do not like having our rights taken away or being told what we can and cannot do, so if a law like this were to be created I see nothing but problems rising.

I think social media platforms, like Facebook, should have some type of scanning system that detects anything that appears to be fake news.  Once the platform has scanned the fake news they then can send a warning to the user letting them know that their post is considered fake news, however this can cause a problem as well.  If it has to do with political parties I can see there being talk about this scanning system having some type of bias.  I just think there isn't really a win-win output in a situation like this and individuals will continue to publish fake news.
